The Galactic Republic, commonly known as the Republic or the Old Republic, was a democratic union of sovereign star systems that governed the galaxy for a thousand years prior to the rise of the Galactic Empire in the Star Wars universe. The Republic’s capital planetwas Coruscant, an ecumenopolis—known as Galactic City—located in the Core Worlds. Its governing body, the Galactic Senate was headquartered on Coruscant where thousands of senators gathered to represent their homeworlds and debate politics under the supervision of the democratically elected Supreme Chancellor. The Jedi Order, a monastic order of Force-sensitive knights, maintained a close relationship with the Republic and, therefore, utilized the Jedi Temple on Coruscant as their primary base of operations.
