Description
ENCOM is an American technological corporation found in the TRON universe. Founded in Walter Gibbs’ garage in 1972, the company originally focused on defense services, but later transformed into a video game firm. Within 10 years, it was one of the world’s leading computer companies. It became a multi-national corporation, most famous for its creation of TRON, a digitization hardware/software.
ENCOM began its meteoric rise to success after the debut of several video games — including Space Paranoids and Matrix Blaster, created by employee Ed Dillinger — later named Senior Executive Vice President. As the conglomerate’s profits increased, it conceived its first piece of non-gaming software, called the Master Control Program (MCP).
Despite rising achievement, the multi-national suffered a crisis when its MCP software seemingly began acting of its own accord, striving to obtain full control over the global Net. After several failed attempts, the malevolent program was finally terminated by Alan Bradley, Lora Baines and Kevin Flynn, one of the original programmers — exposing Dillinger’s actions and earning Flynn promotion to CEO of the company.
With Flynn at the helm, the corporation launched TRON, which would later become the most popular video game in history. After experiencing enormous recognition, Flynn disappeared under mysterious circumstances — leading to a great amount of uncertainty within the company. Without his leadership, the firm suffered from an economic downturn, and fired several key personnel — while losing ground in the industry to Ed Dillinger’s new developing house, Dillinger Systems.
After years of reconstruction, ENCOM finally recovered stability in the 2000s, peaking in the year 2010. Nevertheless, Sam Flynn, son of Kevin, used his majority stock ownership in the company to regain power over the enterprise — laying off Robert Mackey, the CEO at the time, and reinstalling Alan Bradley in the administration — aiming to rediscover the path of his father.
“In there is a new world! In there is our future! In there… is our destiny.” — Kevin Flynn, lead software engineer and creator of Tron.
