The Vault-Tec corporation was contracted by the United States government to design and produce the vault system, a vast network of complex bomb and research shelters in the Fallout universe. Introduced in 1997 in the first Fallout game, it was a major military contractor before the Great War — a one-day nuclear dispute between the United States, China and the Soviet Union — and as such, developed highly experimental, advanced and secret technologies.

The firm was mainly known for its Vault technology, which promised a shelter for every American citizen in case of nuclear conflict. The corporation was once the principal private contractor of the United States Government, dealing with classified activities that led to secret experiments in the vaults — including the creation of super soldiers, cloning of humans, and testing of viruses — among other projects.

Later on, it was discovered that the business was being managed by a group called the Enclave, a conglomerate of government officials and high executives that planned on becoming Earth’s main colonizing force after the Great War. It was also discovered that the Vaults presented several errors — failing to protect, on purpose, most of the population in America from the nuclear holocaust.

Vault-Tec Corporation ceased operation in 2077, after the global catastrophe, but several of its facilities remain active.
