Aperture Laboratories, also known as Aperture Science, is the fictional corporation from Portal and Portal 2. Aperture Laboratories is also used as a trade name by Aperture Science for most of its products. Before the 1970s, the corporation was known as Aperture Science Innovators.
As the main location for both Portal and Portal 2, The Aperture Science computer-aided Enrichment Center is the main location of both Portal and Portal 2. The Center’s main facility is called Aperture Sciences where its new products, entitled Aperture Laboratories, are tested and developed.
The Aperture Science computer-aided Enrichment Center is based in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the United States, the company was founded in 1947 where the company’s products were branded as Aperture Science Innovators.
The company’s CEO, Cave Johnson contracted moon-rock poisoning in 1974, succumbing to kidney failure in 1976. In the space of those two years Johnson developed a three-tier plan for the future of the company: the Heimlich Counter-Maneuver, the Take-A-Wish Foundation, and most importantly, the ‘Portal’ project, which marks the genesis of the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device.
Due to a rumor that the rival company, Black Mesa were developing a similar form of Portal technology, Aperture creates the first Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System (GLaDOS), with the long-term plan of quickening the creation of the first artificial intelligence.
At the beginning of the 21st Century, GLaDOS becomes fully aware and traps her creators in the facility during take you daughter to work day, viewing her captives as lab rats for her own experiments. GLaDOS’ main goal is to beat Black Mesa to the creation of Portal technology but loses as a result of the Black Mesa Incident which allowed an alien force to teleport into the facility with the long-term consequences being a war between the human race and the race known as the Combine.
